Girls on the Run and Boys Run, after-school running programs for students third through fifth grade, are currently looking for local coaches.
The programs, run by Juneau AWARE (Aiding Women in Abuse and Rape Emergencies) as violence prevention measures, meet twice a week after school for 10 weeks this spring. Those interested in coaching would need to be available from 2:30 or 3:30 to 4 or 5 p.m. twice a week depending on the school.
Teams consist of 7 to 15 participants that meet for 90-minute sessions and are led by three to five fully-trained coaches. Coaches will implement a set curriculum and assist teams in running games and drills.
Coaches will need to register before Jan. 20. Season starts Feb. 13 and 14 and lasts through mid May. Those interested are encouraged to contact AWARE. Applications for Girls on the Run can be found at https://www.raceplanner.com/volunteer/signup/gotr-returning-coach-spring-2017; applications for Boys Run can be found at https://www.raceplanner.com/volunteer/signup/britk-coaches-spring-2017
Girls Run encourages positive emotional, social, mental and physical development. Participants explore and discuss their own beliefs around experiences and challenges girls face at this age. They also develop important strategies and skills to help them navigate life experiences.
Boys Run, also known as the I Toowú Klatseen (Strengthen Your Spirit) program, is designed to instill healthy relationship and lifestyle skills in boys through running and cultural lessons, empowering them to create a community of nonviolence and respect.
Both programs culminate in a celebratory 5K running party in mid-May.
