JUNEAU EMPIRE
The Juneau HoopTime boys’ high school basketball team played in two Athletic Amateur Union basketball tournaments in Las Vegas last month.
The Bob Saviers-led squads played in the Las Vegas Classic July 18-20 and the Las Vegas Grand Finale July 21-23. Coach Saviers was assisted by George Houston and Jeff Jenkins. The tournaments were held at the Las Vegas Convention Center. HoopTime played against select and elite teams from Korea, Mexico, Hawaii, Utah, California, New Mexico, among other states. Six countries and all 50 states participated
The team of 14 players competed in two different divisions: 10th grade and 17U/varsity. The 10th grade team earned a second place finish in the Las Vegas Classic out of 32 teams. The 17U/varsity team placed sixth among 28 teams.
The HoopTime teams went 1-3 in the Las Vegas Grand Finale. Fatigue became a factor in this tournament, according to assistant coach Jeff Jenkins, as nearly all the Juneau players played on both the teams.
Players on this year’s teams include: Josh McAndrews, Christian Dorn, Krishant Samtani, Kolby Hoover, Diego Rivera, Devinn Domin, Hansel Hinckle, Connor Guizio, Bernard Yadao, Asher Aanrud, Eduardo Ramirez, Brady Carandang, Cole Jensen, Braden Jenkins, Kamron Falls and Jonathan Stephens.
The coaches wanted to recognize outstanding play by Josh McAndrews, Krishant Santini, Brady Caradang and Braden Jenkins for their combined efforts throughout the tournament.
Players from this year’s teams would also like to thank all sponsors who made this possible, as well as the parents, HoopTime high school committee and the Juneau community for its support. To learn more about the program, visit www.hooptime.org.
