JDHS baseball too strong for Petersburg

The Juneau-Douglas High School baseball overpowered Petersburg High School at the plate in wins on Friday and Saturday.

The Crimson Bears took down the Vikings 14-0 on Friday as senior Donavin McCurley struck out nine batters in a five-inning no-hitter. The game ended early due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Seniors Jacob Dale and Michael Cesar went 3-for-4 at the plate and combined for six RBIs.

“You have weekends where you see (the ball) well, and then you have some where you don’t see it well at all,” Dale said. “So, just a good a weekend I think.”

After scoring just one run in the first two innings, JDHS pulled away the third, scoring 10 runs. Following scores by Dale and Bryan Miramontes, senior Kasey Watts blasted a two-run home run to put the Crimson Bears up 5-0 with one out in the inning.

Dale’s second plate appearance in the inning resulted in a double that scored three more runs as the Vikings pitching continued to struggled.

On Saturday, JDHS again jumped ahead of Petersburg by double digits, coasting to a 13-0 win in five innings.

Dale pitched four innings and allowed just one hit while also making a statement at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Luke Mallinger also hit well for the Crimson Bears, recording two hits and three RBIs.

“I think the pitching was definitely a positive,” Dale said of the series. “I mean, they didn’t score a run all weekend. … I think we were hitting our spots and throwing strikes.”

In the final game of the weekend, freshman Christian Ludeman tallied four RBIs in a 10-0 shutout. Watts struck out 10 Vikings in five innings of work on the mound.

The Crimson Bears take on Thunder Mountain High School on Monday at 7 p.m. at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park.
