The Juneau-Douglas High School cheer team placed first out of four teams (JDHS, Kodiak, Nome-Beltz and Petersburg) in the 2017 Alaska Cheer State Championship Competition in the co-ed division March 22 in Anchorage.
The team also cheered on the JDHS boys and girls basketball teams playing at the state tournament. The cheer team, made up of 21 athletes, did 34 games this season and fundraised over $19,000 to purchase new uniforms and travel expenses.
“There were times when we thought state was out of the questions, but we were able to overcome obstacles, make last-minute changes and work hard to make it happen,” coach Carlene Nore said.
