The Juneau-Douglas High School girls went 2-1 this weekend at the Palmer Elks Showdown, tying Bartlett and Palmer in the win-loss tally at the tournament. Juneau-Douglas lost out on the Showdown title with the tiebreaker going to Bartlett based on the least amount of points conceded.
The Crimson Bears lost to Palmer 54-50 to open the tournament Thursday, then beat their next two opponents Grace Christian (43-34) and Bartlett (53-50) on Friday and Saturday.
Freshman standout Kendyl Carson was named MVP of the tournament. Sophomore Caitlin Pusich made the all-tournament team.
The Crimson Bears next host Thunder Mountain High School next weekend for games Friday and Saturday.
JDHS boys lose two, win one
The Crimson Bears boys didn’t fare quite as well as the girls at the Showdown, losing two games and winning one on the weekend, but JDHS was just five points from taking all three matches.
Like the girls, JDHS opened with a loss on Thursday, dropping their first game to Soldotna 48-45. The Crimson Bears then turned around on Friday for a sizeable 75-49 win over Houston before dropping their final game on Saturday to Palmer 47-45.
JDHS opens their conference schedule next weekend with away games at Ketchikan High School.
