JDHS rallies late against Sitka

The Crimson Bears girls rallied late by scoring 14 fourth-quarter points to defeat visiting Sitka on Monday during the first round of the Capital City Classic.

Juneau-Douglas High School trailed 26-20 after three quarters before the late surge that saw Caitlyn Pusich score six points in the fourth, with four by Kallen Hoover, to defeat the Wolves 34-31 on JDHS’s home court.

Pusich finished with a team-high eight points in a balanced scoring effort. Erica Hurtte had seven, followed by six from Hoover, four each by Georgia Robinson and Tona Fogg, three from Cristina Arehart and two from Alyxn Bohulano.

Hailey Denkinger led Sitka with nine points, followed by Alexandra Kirby with eight, MacKenzie Campbell with seven, Zosha Krupa with four and Tatum Bayne with three.

The Wolves jumped out to an early 16-7 lead after the first quarter and held a 24-14 lead at the half. The Wolves only managed to score two points in the third quarter, allowing JDHS to claw back to a 26-20 deficit. Sitka only mustered a single field goal in the fourth while shooting 3-of-7 from the free throw line.

The JDHS girls play again today at 5 p.m.

CHUGIAK 54, KENAI 24

Chugiak’s A’yanna Tippins led all scorers with 16 points in a 54-24 win over the Kenai Kardinals on Monday at JDHS.

Randi McMullen added 13 in the victory, followed by Hannah Russell with nine, Taylor Williams with eight, and Nicole Pinckney with six.

Kenai’s Lara Creighton led her team with 14 points. Alli Steinbeck added six.

Chugiak held a 27-12 lead at halftime and was up 30-18 after three quarters of play.
