Juneau wrestlers win big over small schools

Juneau’s combined wrestling program notched their first team win this weekend, besting northern Southeast’s small schools at Wrangell’s Tom Sims Invitational. The nominal Thunder Mountain High School program took home titles in four weight classes on their way to 173.02 team points, a full 40 points ahead of runner-up Mt. Edgecumbe (132.03).

Robert Cox, Louie Rubenstein, Cody Weldon and Sam Nolan all stood atop the podium after the weekend’s contest while Ricky Ramirez, Alex Ocana, Derek Mason and Devin Locke finished second for Juneau. Connor Norman, Curtis Strauss, Josh Quinto and Carl Tupou all chipped in with third place finishes.

The weekend’s win marks the first tournament title for a Juneau grappling squad since the team merged into one program at the beginning of the 2016 season. Juneau heads to the Region V tournament next weekend in Sitka.
