Saturday, 9 p.m. — Haines 83, Klukwan 66 (B Bracket Championship)

For the second year in a row, Haines wins the B Bracket championship. Last year, they needed to go to overtime. This time it’s a 83-66 victory over Klukwan, where Haines was up by double-digits for most of the game.

Even with Klukwan’s run to start the second half, there was little doubt for most of this one. Haines was just too consistent and too deliberate. Their long possessions really shortened this game, slowing down a Klukwan team that seemed to want to speed up the pace.

Late in the fourth, Haines easily handled Klukwan’s press, and got a couple easy baskets after breaking the press. Kyle Rush (who was just named Tournament MVP) led Haines with 21 points, with Kyle Fossman adding 15. Klukwan had four players in double-digits, with Austin Shoemaker leading the way with 17 points. Kaleb Tompkins and Jacob Hotch added 12 points each.

A pretty low-key celebration from the Haines players:

All-Tournament Team

Oscar Barragan (Sitka)

Damen Bell-Holter (Hydaburg)

Jacob Hotch (Klukwan)

Clayton Edwin (Angoon)

Tracy Jackson (Kake)

Saturday, 9 p.m. — Haines vs. Klukwan (B Bracket Championship)

Klukwan’s making some noise this half. They cut it all the way down to single digits after starting the half on a 13-1 run. Guy Bean hit a couple of contested threes to help fuel the run.

Haines didn’t let it get any closer. They have long-developing possessions with everyone moving without the ball, and those kinds of possessions will just wear an opponent out.

It’s 61-47 Haines, entering the final 10 minutes of the tournament.

Saturday, 8:35 p.m. — Haines vs. Klukwan (B Bracket Championship)

At halftime, it’s all Haines.

The defending champions are up 48-27 at the half. Haines can’t seem to miss…31 points in the second quarter alone. The last time these two teams met (Thursday night), Haines scored 97. They might get close to that again tonight. Kyle Rush has 15 points to lead Haines, but they’re getting offense from everybody. It’s going to take an absolutely insane second half for Klukwan to get back into this game.

Saturday, 8:15 p.m. — Haines vs. Klukwan (B Bracket Championship)

After a blindingly fast first quarter, Haines leads Klukwan 17-10. I don’t remember the clock stopping hardly at all…for reference, the 10-minute quarter went by in just 12 minutes. It’s a fast-paced but clean game, at least in terms of turnovers and fouls. Shots haven’t started to fall for Klukwan yet, with them missing a few shots right at the basket. If some of those start to fall, they could make up some room.

Klukwan probably wishes each basket were as easy as their first basket, shown below.

Saturday, 7:30 p.m. — Klukwan 74, Angoon 70 (C Bracket Championship)

Klukwan wins back-to-back C Bracket championships with a close win over Angoon. It wasn’t easy. Angoon had chances late to tie or go ahead but the shots didn’t go down.

Jason Shull scored 18 points and Michael Ganey scored 16 points for the winners. Dustin Endicott scored a game-high 20 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter for Angoon.

All-Tournament Team

Willie Hayward (Metlakatla)

Sean Joslyn (Juneau)

Michael Ganey (Klukwan)

Nathan Lovik (Filcom)

Jimmy Jensen (Yakutat)

Saturday, 6:50 p.m.

What a shot! Angoon’s Stephen Johnson makes a halfcourt shot at the end of the third quarter and the crowd is loud here at Juneau-Douglas High School. Klukwan is only up five points early in the fourth.

Saturday, 6:30 p.m.

This one looks like it’s going to go down to the wire. Klukwan leads Angoon 37-33 at halftime in the C Bracket championship game. Angoon defeated Klukwan 70-69 just two days prior at this tournament.

Saturday, 5:25 p.m. — Kake 63, Hoonah 62 (Masters Bracket Championship)

Outrageous ending here. Kake kept getting close and missing. They’d get it within a point or two and then Hoonah would answer. It looked like Hoonah was going to have one last answer…Kake hit a three to tie the game with around 10 seconds left, but then foule Hoonah’s Albert Hinchman.

Hinchman, the reigning M Bracket MVP, hit one of his two foul shots, leaving Kake six seconds. Kake’s Jay Peterson missed a potential game-winning jumper, as the shot clanged off the back rim.

Kip Howard was there.

Howard skied for the rebound, landed, planted his feet and shot. The ball dropped into the net just as the buzzer sounded.

63-62. Kake wins. Video below.

All-Tournament Team

Lloyd Davis (Kake)

Kamal Lindoff (Hoonah)

Jeff Sharnbroich (Klukwan)

Mike Mills (Hoonah)

Jay Peterson (Kake)

Frank Jack (Yakutat)

Tournament MVP

Kip Howard (Kake)

Saturday, 4:55 p.m. — Hoonah vs. Kake (Masters Bracket Championship)

One quarter stands between Hoonah and a second championship in a row. Hoonah weathered a few Kake runs during this quarter, and is hanging on to a 46-40 lead.

The quarter was messy, wild and loud. Kake scored six straight points to start the quarter, but wasn’t able to take the lead at any point. Kake got the lead down to one point a couple times, but Hoonah always had an answer.

One of those Kake runs came about halfway through the quarter when Nick Davis and Jay Peterson hit back-to-back threes to cut the lead to one point. The scorer’s table is surrounded by Kake fans, so that was a pretty loud moment for us here.

Saturday, 4:32 p.m. — Hoonah vs. Kake (Masters Bracket Championship)

As you might expect, this has been a pretty intense one so far. The gym is packed for this rematch after Hoonah beat Kake 81-76 on Monday. If I’m not mistaken, Hoonah’s Andy Gray said something to the effect of, “We might see them again,” in reference to Kake. Well, here we are.

Hoonah leads at halftime, 36-26.

Hoonah quickly turned a six-point advantage into the 10-point lead. Hoonah’s Kamal Lindoff made a layup in the final 40 seconds, then a Kake inbounds pass went out of bounds. That whipped Hoonah’s fans into a frenzy, with them whistling and yelling. They could sense an important chance to pad the team’s lead going into the half. Hoonah did just that, with Tierney Bible, Sr. scoring to push Hoonah’s lead to double-digits going into halftime.

Saturday, 3:20 p.m. — Yakutat 53, Haines 53 (Women’s Bracket Championship)

For the first time since 2014, Yakutat is the last team standing in the Women’s Bracket.

Yakutat defeats Haines today, 65-53, snapping Haines’ streak of two Gold Medal championships. Lorena Williams leads the way with 19 points for Yakutat and Fran Daly paced Haines with 23.

Yakutat went 3-0 this week, beating Haines twice and winning by an average of 11 points per game. Today’s victory comes thanks to a 19-8 advantage in the third quarter, and continuing to make shots down the stretch. There were some ill-timed Haines turnovers in the fourth quarter, and Yakutat avoided being rattled despite Haines continuing to play hard defense into the closing minutes.

Women’s Bracket All-Tourney Team

Alisa Beske (Haines)

Lorena Williams (Yakutat)

Kaylynn Beus (Hoonah)

Fran Daly (Haines)

Kim Buller (Yakutat)

Sportsmanship Award

Mariah Martin (Hoonah)

Most Valuable Player

Rose Fraker (Yakutat)

Saturday, 3 p.m. — Haines vs. Yakutat (Women’s Bracket Championship)

Yakutat doubled Haines up in the third quarter, 19-8, and built its lead to as many as 13 points here in the fourth. Haines still scrapping on defense, but Yakutat’s not blinking. They’re making free throws and have hit a couple back-breaking threes this quarter. Yakutat’s lead is 60-47 with 3:12 left, and it’s going to take a heck of a comeback for Haines to finish off its three-peat (Haines won in 2016 and 2017).

Saturday, 2:30 p.m. — Haines vs. Yakutat (Women’s Bracket Championship)

This game heated up quickly. A frantic final few minutes of the half resulted in two ties and three lead changes, with Yakutat’s Justyne Wheeler making a layup in the closing seconds to push Yakutat to a 32-30 halftime lead.

Saturday, 2 p.m. — Haines vs. Yakutat (Women’s Bracket Championship)

We’re off to a slow start here in the Women’s Bracket until Lorena Williams swishes a three for Yakutat. That’s the first field goal of the game. Haines responds with a couple of baskets in the paint and leads 6-5 as we’re four minutes into the game. Stay tuned here for updates throughout.

Friday, 9:30 p.m. — Klukwan 96, Juneau 72 (C Bracket); Klukwan 87, Hydaburg 80 (B Bracket)

Klukwan came to play Friday night. Both the Klukwan C and B teams picked up wins and are headed to Saturday’s championship games.

Jason Shull scored 30 points help Klukwan pick up the win in the C Bracket. Not to be outdone, Juneau’s Alex Heumann finished off his terrific Gold Medal debut with 45 points. Juneau was outscored 37-20 in the second half by Klukwan.

In the last game of the night, Klukwan overcame a 37-34 halftime deficit in its B Bracket semifinal against Hydaburg.

Klukwan received scoring contributions from eight of its nine players. Kaleb Tompkins scored 17 points while Cody Hotch and Guy Bean each had 16 points.

Hydaburg’s Vinny Edenshaw was in shooting mode throughout the game and scored 47 points. He made eight of the team’s 11 3-pointers.

The four championship games slated for Saturday are as follows:

2 p.m — Haines vs. Yakutat (Women’s)

4 p.m. — Hoonah vs. Kake (Masters)

6 p.m. — Angoon vs. Klukwan (C Bracket)

8 p.m. — Haines vs. Klukwan (B Bracket)

Friday, 5 p.m. — Haines 72, Hoonah 37 (Women’s Bracket); Kake 77, Klukwan 70 (M Bracket)

The Haines women’s team and Kake masters team have advanced to their respective championship games on Saturday.

In the first game of the day, Haines made light work of Hoonah, winning by over 30 points. Fran Daly scored 19 points to lead Haines while Samantha Clay scored 12 and Karli Spud added 11. Haines made 12 3-pointers in the contest. Haines will rematch Yakutat in the championship game at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Yakutat defeated Haines 60-52 in Tuesday action.

The Masters game that followed was closer, but Kake was in control throughout. Kake led 27-16 after the first quarter and 46-27 at halftime. Jay Peterson scored 22 points for Kake while David Buss scored 19 for Klukwan. Kake will play Hoonah in the championship game at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Thursday, 10:45 p.m. — Angoon 70, Klukwan 69 (C Bracket)

For the first time since at least 2016, Klukwan’s C Bracket team dropped a game at Gold Medal. This one came in dramatic fashion, as Angoon’s Stephen Johnson made a layup with seven seconds left to give Angoon the lead. Klukwan got a good look on the other end, but the shot was a little too short.

Klukwan heads to the loser’s bracket, with a chance to fight its way to a rematch with Angoon in Saturday’s title game.

Thursday, 9:20 p.m. — Haines 97, Klukwan 80 (B Bracket)

The defending champions are heading back to the title game. Kyle Fossman led the way with 29 points to lead Haines to victory. Kaleb Tompkins had 19 points for Klukwan.

Thursday, 7:15 p.m. — Yakutat 46, Hoonah 33 (Women’s Bracket)

Yakutat punched its ticket to the Women’s Bracket championship game, paced by Rose Fraker’s 11 points. Kalyn Beus scored 11 points in defeat for Hoonah. Hoonah will have a chance to play its way to the championship game in the loser’s bracket.

Thursday, 5 p.m. — Hydaburg 75, Kake 72 (B Bracket)

From the final minutes of the second quarter until midway through the fourth, Kake held a double-digit lead over Hydaburg in this elimination game. Then the lead disappeared. It happened in a flash.

Damen Bell-Holter hit four threes in the fourth quarter and scored 18 points in the frame to push Hydaburg to victory.

Thursday, 3:30 p.m. — Hoonah 61, Klukwan 56 (M Bracket)

This semifinal game was fast-paced and hectic, with a big third quarter propelling Hoonah to victory. Albert Hinchman scored 12 points as Hoonah outscored Klukwan 22-11 in the third quarter, and Hoonah was able to make free throws down the stretch to close the victory out. Hoonah advances to the championship game, looking to defend its 2017 title.

Check out videos below of Hinchman, both after the game and during the game.

Thursday, 3:20 p.m. — Juneau 89, Metlakatla 86 (C Bracket)

There weren’t too many times in Thursday’s game that Alex Heumann wasn’t scoring. Heumann scored 54 points and Juneau has won three in a row.

Willie Hayward scored 37 points and Richie Hayward had 21 points for Metlakatla.

It’s the second year in a row Juneau has eliminated Metlakatla from the C Bracket.

Juneau will face either Angoon or Klukwan in the semifinals on Friday.

Wednesday, 9:45 p.m. — Hydaburg 78, Angoon 72 (B Bracket)

Hydaburg’s Joe Young nailed a go-ahead 3-pointer with one minute remaining in overtime and Hydaburg defeated Angoon 78-72.

Damen Bell-Holter scored 26 points, Vinny Edenshaw scored 23 points and Young had 19 for the winning side.

Clayton Edwin scored 29 points for Angoon and Duncan O’Brien tallied 23.

Bell-Holter tied the game at 66-66 with 1:15 left in the fourth quarter. He and Edenshaw then forced a jump ball with JJ Jack-Nixon, giving Hydaburg the ball back with 44.7 seconds left in regulation.

Edenshaw dribbled just inside the halfcourt line for approximately 30 seconds before going in for the potential game-winner. His 3-pointer from the right corner hit off the back iron though.

Angoon led 68-66 and 70-68 in overtime before giving up giving up five straight points to Hydaburg.

Hydaburg plays Kake Thursday at 3:30 p.m. for the right to play in Friday’s B Bracket semifinal.

Wednesday, 8:25 p.m.

At half, Damen Bell-Holter’s Hydaburg leads Angoon 37-30. Angoon led 23-22 early in the second quarter before Hydaburg jumped out in front.

Wednesday, 7:45 p.m. — Metlakatla 97, Hoonah 85 (C Bracket)

After going down by 15 points at the end of the third quarter, Hoonah tied the game midway through the fourth. But Metlakatla reclaimed the lead in the final minutes to secure the win.

Willie Hayward scored 45 points for Metlakatla. Richie Hayward added 30, including 13 in the fourth quarter.

Hoonah’s Anthony Lindoff scored 22 points, Jeremy Martin scored 21 and Travis Dybdahl had 20 in the loss.

Metlakata will play Juneau tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.

Wednesday, 2:55 p.m.

It’s Juneau 48, Filcom 37 with one quarter left to play. An 11-point lead might not seem insurmountable, but the way this game has been going it seems like an impenetrable barrier.

Barring an out-of-nowhere comeback, Filcom will be eliminated from the C Bracket while Juneau moves on.

Next up at 3:30 is a Hydaburg-Kake B Bracket matchup.

Wednesday, 2:35 p.m.

Juneau is beating Filcom handily at halftime 33-21 in C Bracket action. “The fast break is killing us,” has been the refrain in Filcom timeouts.

Coming off a 57-point performance in the first round, Juneau’s Alex Heumann is making it look easy in transition. He leads all scorers with 12 so far.

At the break, Filcom is dialing up a defense to contain him. If they can’t, they’re facing an early exit.

Wednesday, 2:25 p.m.

The Yakutat Masters team is the first of six teams to be eliminated today from the tournament. Behind Jay Peterson’s 18 points, Kake defeated Yakutat 60-50 in a game that was close until the very end. Ralph Johnson scored 17 points for Yakutat in the loss.

Wednesday, 8:40 a.m.

The action starts today with Kake facing Yakutat in the Master’s Bracket at 12:30 p.m. and continues all afternoon and evening with alternating B and C Bracket games.

In the C Bracket, Filcom and Juneau clash at 2 p.m. and Hoonah and Metlakatla go head-to-head at 6 p.m. In the B Bracket, Damen Bell-Holter and Hydaburg play Kake at 3:30 p.m. and Angoon squares off with Sitka at 7:30 p.m.

The Haines and Kake women play at 9 p.m. Kake lost 44-37 last night to Hoonah and must win tonight to stay alive.

Angoon earned its spot in tonight’s B Bracket game by defeating Hoonah 88-64 late last night. Clayton Edwin scored 43 points for Angoon while Brian Koenig finished with 15 for Hoonah.

Tuesday, 8:15 p.m.

Packed gym for the Hoonah-Kake women’s game here at JDHS. The teams are tied 17-17 at halftime. Winner gets to take tomorrow off and play Yakutat on Thursday. The loser will take on Haines tomorrow night at 9 p.m.

Tuesday, 7:40 p.m. — Metlakatla 83, Kake 62 (C Bracket)

Gabe Duckworth (30 points) and Willie Hayward (28 points) ensure Metlakatla will play another day. Kake’s Scott Jackson scored 15 points in the loss. After leading by six at halftime, Metlakatla outscored Kake 26-12 in the third quarter to take control of the contest. Metlakatla plays Hoonah on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Tuesday, 5:45 p.m. — Kake 74, Yakutat 62 (B Bracket)

After dropping their opening game to Hydaburg, Kake gets past Yakutat in the loser’s bracket. Just two more games to go today at Juneau-Douglas High School. The Kake women take on Hoonah at 7:30 p.m. before Angoon and Hoonah square off in the B Bracket at 9 p.m.

Tuesday, 4:25 p.m. — Juneau 114, Yakutat 102 (3 OT) (C Bracket)

It took everything and then some from Alex Heumann for his Juneau team to defeat Yakutat, who led for much of regulation in this C Bracket contest. Heumann scored a ridiculous 57 points in a triple-overtime win.

Tuesday, 2:10 p.m. — Yakutat 60, Haines 52 (Women’s Bracket)

Yakutat’s Kim Buller finished off her 20-point game with a key steal and layup followed by a pair of free throws in the victory.

Haines was led by 13 points from Samantha Clay and Fran Daly each.

Yakutat’s Rose Fraker finished with 12 points with eight coming in the fourth quarter holding off a Haines’ run.

Tuesday, 1:10 p.m. — Haines 28, Yakutat 25 (Halftime)

The pace has been frantic for the entire game. Yakutat held the lead for most of the first half until the 3-ball started to fall for Haines. Maria Tulik, Krista Kielsmeir and Samantha Clay all hit from deep. Fran Daly paced Haines with six first points in the half. Yakutat was led by Kim Buller with six points in the first half.

Tuesday, 12:15 p.m. — Haines vs. Yakutat (Women’s Bracket)

Tuesday’s action of the 72nd annual Gold Medal Tournament tips off at 12:30 p.m. with the first game in the women’s bracket. Two-time defending champion Haines takes to the court against Yakutat in the first of six games scheduled. We will have updates throughout the week, all the way up to the championship games on Saturday. Be sure to bookmark this page and check back for the latest on what’s happening.

Monday, 11 p.m. — Klukwan 84, Filcom 64 (C Bracket) and Klukwan 65, Yakutat 62 (M Bracket)

The final two results of the night are both wins for Klukwan. For the defending C Bracket champions, Jason Shull and Stuart DeWitt scored 24 and 20 points, respectively, to lead Klukwan over Filcom. David Buss led the M Bracket squad with 23 points.

Monday, 8:30 p.m. — Haines 91, Sitka 54 (B Bracket)

An offensive explosion from Haines in the 6 p.m. game. Kyle rush led Haines with 28 points.

Monday, 5:15 p.m. — Klukwan 65, Hydaburg 61 (B Bracket)

Hydaburg goes down, as Klukwan makes a big defensive stand near the end. They didn’t even allow Hydaburg to get a shot off, as Hydaburg was looking to score to tie the game at 63. Klukwan knocked the ball away and got a breakaway layup to end the game.

Kaleb Tompkins led Klukwan with 23 points, 14 of which came in the second half. Vinny Edenshaw led Hydaburg with 24 points. Bell-Holter had 12 points, and seemed much more interested in passing and rebounding than he did in scoring. It was interesting to watch.

Monday, 4:20 p.m. — Hydaburg vs. Klukwan (B Bracket)

Hydaburg, featuring former Boston Celtic Damen Bell-Holter, leads Klukwan 29-27 at halftime. Bell-Holter has just three points, but has been cleaning up on the glass.

Monday, 3:40 p.m. — Hoonah 80, Kake 76 (M Bracket)

It came right down to the final moments, and Hoonah made enough free throws down the stretch to survive. Hoonah’s Andy Gray was 7-for-8 from the line in the fourth quarter alone and ended with 19 points. Ken Willard also scored 19 to share the team lead with Gray.

Kake’s Lloyd Davis dropped 32 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough.

Kind of a cool thing, the two teams gathered at midcourt after the game to do a quick chant in honor of Willis Cavanaugh, a former Kake player who died this past year in a boating accident. That’s one of the cool things about Gold Medal, is these teams getting along with each other and caring about each other.

Monday, 3 p.m. — Hoonah vs. Kake (M Bracket)

Hoonah led for much of the first half, but Kake kept hanging around and battled to a 40-40 tie heading into halftime. We’re midway through the third quarter here now, with Hoonah up 57-54. Teams trading baskets and leads so far this half. Juneau Police Department Chief Ed Mercer is playing on Hoonah’s team. Always interesting to see public figures in town in a different context here on the court.

Monday, 2 p.m. — Angoon 88, Hoonah 82 (C Bracket)

A big third quarter propels Angoon to victory here. Angoon outscored Hoonah 19-8 in the third and the lead was as big as 12 late in the game. Hoonah wouldn’t go away, as Travis Dybdahl hit a few huge threes in the final minutes and helped cut the lead to just five points. Dybdahl finished with a game-high 31 points, thanks to shooting 10-for-18 from the foul line and making three threes.

Angoon held on, thanks to a couple offensive rebounds and free throws in the closing moments. Dustin Endicott and Curtis Lane paced Angoon with 17 points each.

Monday, 1:15 p.m. — Angoon vs. Hoonah

After an intense first half, Hoonah leads 52-47. It’s a pretty packed house here at Juneau-Douglas High School, and two passionate fanbases are making themselves heard.
