Local youth ski race at Montana Creek trails

The Juneau Nordic Ski Team held the “I Had a Dream” race Saturday, Jan. 13.

Twenty middle and high school members of the ski team gathered at Montana Creek Ski Trail for the first race of the season.

Skiers chose between classic or skate techniques and distance of either 5-kilometers or 10-kilometers.

Clem Taylor-Roth came in first in the 10K race on classic skis. Finn Morley and Aaron Blust battled for second place on skate skis, with Morley edging to the finish just a split second before Blust.

Erin Wallace came in first in the 5K race, followed close behind by Lily Otsea. Koa Doddridge came in third.

The team has been training four days a week wherever snow can be found. Recently they skate skied to the Eagle’s Nest at the top of Eaglecrest. They’ve also been snowshoeing, running and hill bounding with ski poles.

The JNST will travel to the Yukon in mid-February for the Mount Lorne Classic ski race and Skagway in March for the Buckwheat Ski Classic. Some racers will also represent the team at the Tour of Anchorage on March 4.

Visit the Juneau Nordic Ski Club website at www.jnski.org to see the race schedule.

The team operates under the 4-H Cooperative Extension, a recreational ski group of youth skiers meets on Sunday afternoons. For more information on the ski program email juneau.nordic.ski.team@gmail.com.
