Michel, Hughes lead Monroe Catholic past JDHS

Ryan Michel and Silas Hughes each scored two goals Friday night for Monroe Catholic (8-7-1), who skated to a 6-1 victory over Juneau-Douglas at Treadwell Arena.

The Crimson Bears (2-9-0) recorded 28 shots on net, but Jayden Pasillas stopped 27 of those in a near shutout bid for the sophomore goaltender.

With JDHS down 5-0, freshman defenseman Chance Turinsky scored early in the third period to prevent the shutout.

The Crimson Bears only have only been shut out once this season — last month’s 6-0 loss to Colony.

Michel and Landon Bartels scored 21 seconds apart from each other midway through the first period to put the Rams up 2-0.

Hughes and Michel added to the Rams’ lead in the second period. Hughes scored his first goal at 6:49 of the period before Michel added another one at 8:22. Hughes would score his second goal of the period at 13:35.

Riley Ott capped Monroe Catholic’s scoring late in the third period.

The Crimson Bears play in Fairbanks next week, with games scheduled with Lathrop on Thursday and Friday and Monroe Catholic on Saturday.

JDHS 3, Monroe 2 (OT)

Juneau-Douglas High School junior Erik Genitz scored midway through overtime Thursday night at Treadwell Arena as JDHS upset visiting Monroe Catholic, 3-2.

Cody Mitchell stopped 28 shots in net for JDHS (2-8), who snapped an eight-game losing streak with the victory.

“This was definitely a good night,” JDHS coach Luke Adams said. “We needed that victory and the kids earned it today, so we’re proud of them.”

Positioned in one of the north corners of the rink with just two minutes remaining in overtime, Genitz gathered a puck that bounced out from behind the net. The exchange student from Sweden opted to shoot the puck instead of pass it, and used Monroe Catholic goaltender Jaden Pasillas’ leg pads to redirect the puck into the net.

Adams said some of his team didn’t even know high school games went into overtime if the situation warranted it.

“I think that might’ve helped just stay calm so when we dropped the puck, we were like, ‘OK, lets try to win this game still,’” Adams said.

Struggling to match Monroe’s speed through the first two periods, JDHS trailed 2-1. In the third period however, the Crimson Bears turned to a familiar source to get them back in the game.

Jacob Dale scored the game-tying goal at 7:57 of the final frame and just as a Crimson Bears’ power play expired. The tally was a relief to the entire team and Dale, who was denied by Pasillas on a breakaway attempt earlier on the man advantage.

“You kick yourself because you don’t really get that many in the game,” Dale said.

Dale’s goal was assisted by Ronan Lynch, who made an impressive pass across the net to an all-alone Dale.

“I was yelling, I don’t know if he heard me, it might’ve just been a little lucky,” Dale added.

The Crimson Bears scored the first goal of the game early in the second period.

Twenty-eight seconds into the period and on the penalty kill, junior Cameron Smith put the Crimson Bears up 1-0. The JDHS defenseman’s burst of speed through the middle of the ice caught the Rams on their heels and he beat Pasillas glove side.

Smith went the penalty box just two minutes after the goal, however. The infraction would prove costly — Rams sophomore Evan Fritze deflected the puck into the upper reaches of the net 34 seconds into the power play to tie the game. Later in the period, Caleb Sanborn gave the Rams the lead, scoring an even-strength goal.

The Rams maintained the lead for approximately 10 minutes before Dale tied the score at 2-2 midway through the third period.
