Middle school cross-country squads hold final race

The seventh-grade girls and the sixth-grade boys had the top combined points in the final middle school cross country gathering of the season last week as more than 100 runners among the girls and boys races completed a 1.6-mile course along the Treadwell Mine Trails.

The girls race featured a one-second sprint difference across the Sandy Beach finish line with Dzantik’i Heeni seventh-grader Taylor Bentley edging Floyd Dryden seventh-grader Sophia Harvey in a time of 11 minutes and 44 seconds. Harvey hit 11:45 and third-place runner Trinity Jackson, a DZ sixth-grader, followed in 11:46. Rounding out the top 10 were Montessori Borealis sixth-grader Mckenna McNutt, fourth in 11:54; Juneau Community Charter School eighth-grader Eva Goering, fifth in 12:00; DZ eighth-grader Marina Lloyd, sixth in 12:02; DZ eighth-grader Anna Iverson, seventh in 12:11; DZ seventh-grader Jojo Griggs, eighth in 12:16; DZ seventh-grader Kiana Potter, ninth 12:17 and FD eighth-grader Reece Bleakley, 10th in 12:22.

The top three sixth-grade girls were Jackson (third overall), McNutt (fourth), and Lloyd (sixth). The top three seventh-grade girls were Bentley (first), Harvey (second) and Griggs (eighth). The top three eighth-grade girls were Goering (fifth), Iverson (seventh) and Bleakley (10th).

If scored by grades, the seventh-grade girls had 31 points, sixth-grade 41 and eighth-grade 50. Scoring by school gave the Dzantik’i Heeni girls 25 points, Floyd Dryden 69, Montessori Borealis 97, and Juneau Community Charter School 185.

The boys race saw Floyd Dryden sixth-grader Matthew Johns outdistance the competition for a 10:39 finish with Juneau Community Charter School seventh-grader Finn Morley hitting second in 10:52 and FD sixth-grader Colton Johns taking third at 11:01. Rounding out the top 10 were DZ eighth-grader Fenton Jim, fourth at 11:05; JCCS sixth-grader Sage Yeshua, fifth in 11:30; DZ sixth-grader Joey Meier, sixth in 11:33; JCCS eighth-grader Aaron Blust, seventh in 11:37; DZ sixth-grader Owen Costello, eighth in 11:58; MB seventh-grader Elias West, ninth in 12:17; and DZ seventh-grader Jonah Brown, 10th in 12:08.

The top three sixth-grader finishers were M. Johns (first overall), C. Johns (third) and Yeshua (fifth). The top three seventh-grade runners were Morley (second), West (ninth) and Brown (10th). The top three eighth-grade finishers were Jim (fourth), Blust (seventh) and JCCS’ Ambrose Bucy (13th).

Scoring by grades saw a youth movement with the sixth-grade boys notching 23 points, the seventh grade 52 and eighth grade 62. Scoring by school gave the boys from DZ 39, JCCS 57, FD 86, and MB 101.

The combined scoring points gave the sixth grade the advantage with 64 points, seventh grade 83, and eighth grade 112. Combined school points had DZ on top with 64 points, FD 155, MB 198, and JCCS 242.
