ANCHORAGE — Iditarod mushers are asking the Iditarod Trail Committee to reconsider a new rule that will allow them to bring two-way communication devices on the trail.
KTVA-TV reported that four-time champion Dallas Seavey has created a petition asking the committee to ensure that mushers won’t abuse the rule.
The new rule bans the use of communications for outside assistance or to contact members of the media but does not say how race officials will enforce the rule. Seavey’s petition asks that the devices be required to be stored in specific containers that would be checked before and after the race.
Race officials say they are open to feedback.
Seavey’s petition also asks the committee to establish a 24-hour hotline for mushers, citing the attacks on mushers during this year’s race.
