Annika Schwartz and Trinity Jackson are the Juneau Empire’s players of the week.
The Juneau-Douglas High School freshmen helped the Crimson Bears sweep the top-five places in the Region V Cross Country Running Championships Division I girls race on Saturday. Schwartz and Jackson ran alongside one another throughout the 5-kilometer race, separating only in the final 100 meters. Jackson finished in third place (20 minutes, 25 seconds) ahead of Katie McKenna (20:29.28) and Schwartz (20:29.67).
Both runners will toe the starting line in their first state cross country meet this Saturday at Bartlett High School in Anchorage.
