Region V Basketball Tournament awards

The conclusion of the Alaska Airlines Region V 2A/4A Basketball Tournament on Saturday at Mt. Edgecumbe High School’s B.J. McGillis Gymnasium in Sitka and the Eastern Conference Tournament at Sitka High featured a variety of awards.

Before the awards were announced Petersburg High School girls coach Dino Brock and Mt. Edgecumbe High School boys coach Archie Young were honored for their contributions on and off the court. Brock retired before the season started and Young is retiring this season. The two are cousins.

According to the recognition Brock has coached for 31 years in Southeast Alaska, 29 of those in Petersburg. He graduated from Wrangell in 1983 and has taught physical education in Petersburg for the past 29 years as well. In Brock’s tenure as an assistant coach and head coach he has been part of 10 Region V championships and one state title in 2016 adding to this with 300 wins. His brother Rick coaches the Petersburg boys.

Young has been the varsity basketball coach all 25 years at Mt Edgecumbe High School. Young was also the assistant varsity volleyball coach for 10 years and has been the head Native Youth Olympics Coach for 14 years. In these years of coaching basketball Young has amassed over 400 wins, seven Region V Championships, one Crossover Championship and multiple state appearances. Young was part of two volleyball state champs and four runner-ups, and also had coached two NYO State Champs.

Girls – 4A Thunder Mountain (Juneau-Douglas), 3A Mt. Edgecumbe (Sitka), 2A Metlakatla (Haines).

Boys – 4A TM (JD), 3A MEHS (Houston), 2A PSG (WRG).

Note – The TM boys and girls automatically advanced to the state championships by winning regions, but no other Southeast Conference 4A team received an at-large bid. The MEHS boys and girls advanced to 3A State and the Sitka girls earned an at-large. For 2A, the PSG and Wrg boys and MET and HNS girls earned automatic state qualifying. The top-ranked MET boys were upset at regions, but received an at-large. The March Madness Alaska State Basketball Championships are March 13-16 (1A/2A) and March 20-23 (3A/4A).
