As the fog rose above Twin Lakes last Saturday morning, 66 participants ran in the first annual Healing Hand Foundation 5K and 1 mile run.
Rob Swanson and Sadie Tuckwood set the pace for the 5K. Swanson covered the course in 16 minutes, 54 seconds, slightly faster than high school standout Arne Ellefson-Carnes, who eked out a 17:05 finish.
Tuckwood cruised to a first-place finish in the women’s division in 18:49.
The event was co-sponsored by Healing Hand Foundation and SEARHC Health Promotions. The out-and-back race course started at the Twin Lakes shelter and progressed along the sidewalk. Runners turned back toward the shelter slightly past the Juneau Pioneer Home.
Healing Hand Foundation provides assistance to Alaska Natives and veterans with unfunded medical and health care needs.
Healing Hand Foundation raised $760 in donations and race fees, which will be matched by Sealaska Legacy grant and go toward durable medical items in Southeast Alaska.
Door prizes were provided by Elgee, Rehfeld & Mertz, LLC, Foggy Mountain Shop and Trickster Company.
