Spikers sharpen game at Dimond tourney

At an Oct. 21-22 tournament at Dimond High School in Anchorage, Juneau-Douglas High School and Thunder Mountain High School’s spikers went a combined 5-11, taking some lumps in the run up to this weekend’s last home games. TMHS won three games out of eight, while JDHS won two of eight.

In Friday’s pool play, Thunder Mountain bested Lathrup (25-17, 25-23) and took losses from Nikiski (12-25, 16-25), Eagle River (25-16, 17-25), and Dimond (20-25, 14-25). JDHS fared similarly in pool play, winning against Homer (25-12, 25-20) and taking losses to Chugiak (23-25, 21-25), Colony (26-28, 17-25) and West Valley (11-25, 17-25).

Both teams qualified for the Silver Bracket in Saturday’s tournament play. Thunder Mountain lost to Kodiak 10-25, 10-25 in the first round, then turned around for some revenge on Nikiski in a 25-18, 19-25, 15-8 consolation bracket win before losing a 20-25, 22-25 knockout loss to Bartlett in the consolation bracket finals.

JDHS won their first tournament match against Bartlett 25-19, 25-22 before losing to Kodiak 18-25, 25-19, 12-15 in the Silver Bracket semifinals.

The Falcons and Crimson Bears play each other at home this weekend for Region V action on Friday and Saturday. Friday’s varsity game tips off at 8 p.m. at TMHS. JDHS plays host on Saturday for a 6 p.m. game.
