TMHS girls go 0-3 on opening road trip

Thunder Mountain High School girls basketball lost all three of their matches in their opening road stint in Anchorage this weekend, losing to Chugiak 64-23, Nikiski 41-16 and Kenai 43-33.

Sophomore forward Nina Fenumiai led the Falcons with 13 points against Chugiak, scoring four field goals, a 3-pointer and two free throws on four attempts on Wednesday.

After facing Chugiak, the girls competed in the Kenai River Challenge Thursday and Friday. Nikiski was able to keep Fenumiai in check in their first game at the challenge Thursday, holding her to five points while junior guard Cyrene Uddipa led the Falcons with six in the loss.

Fenumiai again led against Kenai with 16 points on Friday, with Charlee Lewis and Uddipa each adding seven.

The Falcons next play in the Capitol City Classic Dec. 27-29 at Juneau-Douglas High School.

Falcons boys 1-1 through Friday

The Falcons’ boys basketball squad split a pair of close games this weekend in their first two contests of the season, losing to West Valley 69-64 on Thursday and then besting North Pole 69-63 on Friday.

Thunder Mountain spread the ball around in their loss to West Valley, with forwards Riley Olson and Noah Reishus-O’Brien both scoring 21 points and guard Chase Saviers following their lead with 16. The Falcons went into the final period up six after outscoring the Wolf Pack 21-12 in the third, but West Valley buckled down in the final frame, holding TMHS to just five points while putting up 16.

Reishus-O’Brien led all scorers against North Pole with 28 with Olson adding five field goals, two 3-pointers and two free throws for 18.

The Falcons open their home schedule against West Valley Jan. 6-7.
