The first track and field meet and softball games of the spring took place Friday and Saturday.
The Juneau-Douglas girls won the Ketchikan Invitational in convincing fashion, scoring 194 points. Five athletes — Sadie Tuckwood, Trinity Jackson, Anna Iverson, Katie McKenna and Lainey Rehder — made multiple podium visits for the Crimson Bears. Jackson, a freshman, was particularly impressive in her first-ever meet, winning the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes and triple jump.
Tuckwood, Jackson, Iverson and McKenna made up the bulk of last fall’s state cross country championship team.

The Thunder Mountain girls, who placed second, had a strong showing in the sprinting events, placing in the top-two in the 100 meters, 100-meter hurdles, 200 meters, 300-meter hurdles and 400 meters.
The JDHS and TMHS boys finished the invite in second and third place, respectively. Crimson Bear sophomore Dawson Hickok placed first in all three of his individual events — the 200 meters, long jump and triple jump.
The Southeast track scene shifts to Sitka for the Sitka Invitational this weekend.
Lady Kings clip Falcons’ wings
The Thunder Mountain softball team dropped their season opener to Ketchikan 9-5 on Friday in a rematch of last season’s state championship game in Fairbanks. The Falcons rebounded Saturday with a 11-7 victory over the Lady Kings, before losing a second time to Ketchikan 7-4. All three games were played at Dudley Field in Ketchikan.

Senior Nina Fenumiai punched out three batters in the Falcons’ win, while Kyra Jenkins Hayes posted four hits and two RBIs.
TMHS plays against the Sitka Wolves this Friday and Saturday. The Falcons and Wolves meet Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 11 p.m. and 2 p.m. in Sitka.
Winless in Sitka
The Juneau-Douglas softball team lost three straight road games to Sitka at Moller Field. After scoring just six runs over their first two losses on Friday night and Saturday afternoon, the Crimson Bears scratched across 15 runs in the weekend finale, a 15-14 loss.
JDHS swaps places with TMHS this weekend for three road games against Ketchikan.
